Mandatory movies for men

If you are a man in America these are 5 movies you are ordered to love. Actually, these are not just for men but anyone who likes good movies but if you are female and can’t recite every line from the following films you will be forgiven (not so for you guys out there).

No, not the 2012 gut punch of a remake, but the 1984 masterpiece.  This movie is essential watching for any male over 13.  This is an action movie that doesn’t go overboard with the 80’s style action. Rather, it tells a gritty tale of underdog patriot teens who learn about hardship, family, and friendship all while defeating communism.

Simply put The Dude should be every mans hero.  This movie is so rich with nuance that you can, and should, watch it dozens of times and still find something new in each of the characters performances.  The lineup couldn’t be better with Jeff Bridges, Steve Buscemi, John Goodman, Julian Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Flea, etc… I must admit when I first saw this in the theater i was luke warm to it, but on the second watch the light went on and I realized the genius of this film.

Yes its a little dated, and the story isn’t well… good… BUT Kurt Russel as the machismo Jack Burton makes this a top choice for all dudes who want a fun movie that will make you get that trucker hat from the early 2000’s out of the drawer.  I think this quote from Jack sums the movie up nicely: ” Just remember what ol’ Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol’ storm right square in the eye and he says, “Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it.”

Yes Rocky 1 and Rocky 2 are better movies but I make the case for ROCKY 3 as a must for men because you have, well… Mr T! Not to mention the death of Mickey and an enemy turned mentor (Apollo Creed).  This is the classic tale of defeat and redemption complete with montages, slow motion punches and the well known, but well loved ROCKY crescendo.

One of the best movies made in the past 30 years and a must see for every human adult.  Everyone loves this movie and for good reason, the true story of a local boy turned wiseguy has everything we love.  If you watch this and don’t find yourself wanting to find a polyester shirt and nu leather jacket then something may be wrong with you.

Your list is solid. First Blood, Conan the Barbarian, Patton, Roadhouse and Blues Brothers are also five excellently quasi-schlocky man-films. I don’t think any of the same actors are in these five films.
